  • In order to assess the treatment results in this patient group the authors evaluated the retrospective multicenter data and performed a prospective clinical study up to 24 months postoperatively in 44 patients of a single institution.
  • Elderly patients showed a complete remission of palsies in 67% and of sensation disorders in 54% compared to 100% and 88% respectively in younger patients.
  • 60% of the elderly and 54% of the younger patients suffered from pain, but less intensively than pre treatment.

  • [Title] Effects of age and non-oropharyngeal proprioceptive and exteroceptive sensation on the magnitude of anticipatory mouth opening during eating.
  • Anticipatory, pre-swallow motor movements may be critical to safe and efficient eating/swallowing, particularly for older adults.
  • This study compared the magnitude of anticipatory mouth opening during eating in healthy older (aged 70-85) and younger (aged 18-30) adults under four eating conditions: typical self-feeding, typical assisted feeding (being fed by a research assistant resulting in proprioceptive loss), sensory loss self-feeding (wearing blindfold/headphones resulting in exteroceptive loss) and sensory loss assisted feeding (proprioceptive and exteroceptive loss).
  • Our finding that the loss of non-oropharyngeal sensory cues resulted in decreased anticipatory mouth opening highlights how important proprioception, vision, and hearing are in pre-swallow behaviour.
  • Age- and disease-related changes in vision, hearing, and the ability to self-feed may reduce the effectiveness of these pre-swallow strategies.

  • [Title] The most common complications after wisdom-tooth removal: part 1: a retrospective study of 1,199 cases in the mandible.
  • The present retrospective study analyzed the influence of different parameters, such as the patient’s age and gender, retention type, and radiological projection (using orthopantomography) of wisdom teeth on the mandibular canal on postoperative complications after the removal of 1,199 wisdom teeth.
  • Overall, 101 (8.4%) complications occurred: 50 cases of alveolar osteitis (4.2%), 12 temporary (1%) and 6 persistent (0.5%) sensation disorders, 15 abscesses (1.25%), 7 dehiscences (0.6%), 5 cases of post-operative bleeding (0.4%), 4 sequestra (0.32%), 1 fistula (0.08%) and 1 hematoma (0.08%).
  • A significant correlation (p<0.0001) could be shown between the radiological projection of wisdom teeth on the mandibular canal and post-operative sensation disorders.
  • The experience of the surgeon and pre-operative 3-dimensional imaging (cone- beam computed tomography, computed tomography) did not reduce this risk.
